Outline Description of Module
The group project aims to develop skills in group and team management by producing a solution to a real problem within a specified time scale and to an acceptable standard.
Students work typically in groups of 4 to 6 students. Group project work involves the use of state-of-the-art test & measurement equipment and CAD within the relevant research groups. Supporting lectures dealing with project management skills are timetabled at relevant points in the group project.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- To develop skills in group working and team management in applying engineering principles to the solution of a design problem of significant complexity.
- To further develop and refine oral and written technical communication skills.
How the module will be delivered
Weekly meetings will be arranged by members of staff responsible for supervising this major group project. There will be a number of one-hour lectures on management issues in related engineering projects given by external industrialists.
Skills that will be practised and developed
- Demonstrate via oral presentation and a substantial written report their understanding of, and their contribution to, the group project.
- Analyse a problem of significant complexity from a variety of viewpoints and develop appropriate solutions.
- Use competently the state-of-the-art hardware, software and CAD facilites provided within the research laboratories relevant to the group project.
- Work as part of an engineering team.
- Address relevant financial, environmental and social factors .
- Demonstrate project management skills.
How the module will be assessed
100% coursework, comprising a group project report, oral presentations and a poster. All elements are group assessments, with peer review applied to both Autumn and Spring elements.
A project brief (Autumn week 3) will provide one formative feedback opportunity.
Summative feedback comprises:
1. Group presentation towards the end of the Autumn semester - 10%
2. Interim report, end of the Autumn semester - 20%
3. Viva and poster, end of Spring semester - 20%
4. Final report - 50%
