School Cardiff School of Engineering
Department Code ENGIN
Module Code EN2904
External Subject Code 100182
Number of Credits 10
Level L5
Language of Delivery English
Module Leader Dr Nicholas Bennion
Semester Autumn Semester
Academic Year 2023/4

Outline Description of Module

To understand and solve the manufacturing management problems involved in the design and operation of manufacturing systems.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Categorise the features of a manufacturing system.
  • Select appropriate design strategies to suit individual manufacturing system requirements.
  • Formulate outline manufacturing system designs.

How the module will be delivered

The module will be delivered through a blend of online teaching and learning material, guided study, and on-campus face-to-face classes (tutorials, feedback sessions). These are used to explain and demonstrate the principles of Manufacturing Systems Design identified within the learning outcomes of the module. Industrial case studies are reviewed in class sessions to support this understanding. Students are directed to other sources of knowledge acquisition, including recommended texts and the Internet in order to complete the coursework elements.

Skills that will be practised and developed

  • Problem analysis and the selection of appropriate solutions.
  • Creative problem solving and innovative manufacturing system design.
  • Problem analysis using computer based engineering methods.
  • Manufacturing system simulation methods.
  • Individual and team based problem solving.
  • Knowledge elicitation techniques.

How the module will be assessed

This module is assessed by a two hour examination (90%) and a 40-minute class test (10%).

The class test typically consists of two questions and is designed to allow the student to evaluate their progress in relation to the module learning outcomes. Test answers are reviewed to reinforce these points. The examination consists of six questions, of which the students are asked to attempt four. Questions are set to allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the module learning outcomes.

There is a potential for re-assessment in this module which may result in a 100% written assessment during the August Resit period.
